After victories against the American Parks and the Russian top 10 player Kasatkina, Mertens was back in the right flow after a few lesser months. In the third round she had to pass Petra Martic (WTA 41), who is two places lower than Mertens with her ranking and is a tough opponent.

But just like in the previous three mutual meetings, the Limburger pulled the sheet to herself. After 1 hour and 47 minutes the 6-4 6-3 final score was on the board. A much bigger clapper awaits in the next round, because then Mertens will face Elena Rybakina, the tenth seed.

The Kazakh is doing very well and won the Indian Wells tournament last week. At the beginning of this year she also reached the final of the Australian Open, but she lost to Aryna Sabalenka.
