Denmark took away Finland 3-1 at home on Thursday evening in the first qualifying match for the 2024 European Championship in Germany. With the home team, one Rasmus Højlund stole the show with a hat trick.

Højlund, a 20-year-old attacker who is active with the Italian Atalanta Bergamo, played himself into the hearts of the Danish football nation during his third international match on Thursday evening. With three goals, he single-handedly secured the first victory in the qualifying campaign. And they saw that in Denmark. Christian Norgaard described Højlund as “the new sheriff in town”. “He is really present in the penalty area, takes the lead and can easily score a goal,” said the Brentford midfielder. “He is not just a new young player. He is actively involved in the team. Something that says a lot about his character.”

At 20 springs and 47 days, Højlund is the youngest Danish player after Michael Laudrup in 1983 to score a hat-trick. The local media was therefore nothing but praise. “What speed he has! Denmark’s new comet is physically much older than the 20 years listed on its passport. He played like a superstar and underlined that with three goals,” wrote Extra Magazine. “This was craftsmanship, in a class of its own. Højlund is the present and future of the national team,” added The tip sheet up to it.
