After defeat at Standard, David Antunas Pereira is counting on the reaction of Club YLA against Genk: “Winning again against the former team would be a big boost”

The first competition match after the winter break turned out to be a disaster for Club YLA. On a visit to the sophisticated Standard Liège, Blue-Black suffered a 3-0 defeat. T2 David Pereira does not want to dwell too long on Saturday’s non-match, but expects a different face from Club YLA next weekend in the home match against former team KRC Genk.

Club YLA had taken into account that Standard would be eager for revenge after being eliminated from the cup. Losing 3-0 is clearly a wake-up call after the strong first round. “We actually started the match very strongly and had two chances to open the score,” said T2 David Pereira. “Then fifteen minutes later we conceded the first goal out of nowhere and that turned out to be a big blow. We went too much along with the physical play of the people from Liège and despite our good will we were no longer able to create opportunities.”

“Even in the second half, in which the assignment was to finish the game and make it difficult for Standard to play football, we were unable to make a difference,” Pereira continues. “The 2-0 was due to a misunderstanding between defender Sejde Abrahamsson and goalkeeper Jorijn Covent, but apart from that there was never actually a point. I keep it on a collective off day myself. It will be very important this week to put our heads together so that we can show a clear response next weekend in the important home match against Genk.

Step ahead

David Antunas Pereira was Guido Brepoels’ permanent assistant at KRC Genk for five years. The current T2 of Club YLA would like to outdo his former team again after the 2-4 victory at the beginning of September. “I still have many contacts in Genk, where I played football for more than ten years, but with full enthusiasm I opted for a new adventure at Club YLA. When I look at the full picture, I can only say wholeheartedly that I have taken a big step forward. In the beginning, with an almost completely new technical staff, there was logically some searching involved, but in the meantime everyone has found their role. Whether there is still much contact with the people of Genk? I still hear some of the players and especially Guido very regularly. This week, coincidentally or not, it remained remarkably quiet,” laughs Pereira.
