Brian Riemer is full of praise for the new rule regarding punishing supporters: “If you misbehave as a supporter, there are consequences”

Ahead of Anderlecht’s crucial away match against relegation candidate Charleroi, Anderlecht coach Brian Riemer takes a look at the recent change in Belgian football. The new rule regarding punishing supporters by banning away matches was therefore a hot topic during his press conference.

Riemer is very positive about the new rule. The Anderlecht coach obviously does not hope that he will have to play away matches without RSCA supporters, but he does see the benefit of it. “I was active in England for years, where hooliganism was very popular in and around the stadiums. With drastic actions by clubs and supporters, hooliganism has all but disappeared. In Belgium, several matches have already been interrupted this season due to misconduct by (away) fans. As a coach this is of course frustrating, because you want to focus on the team and the match, not on peripheral matters.”

Riemer likes rules and believes that there should be clarity surrounding the behavior of supporters. “After the match, there is more talk about the behavior of the supporters than about the match itself. I would like to talk about football and our performances on the field, but sometimes that is not easy. Hopefully, more clarity can be created about how supporters should behave correctly in a stadium and the right perpetrators can be punished.”

The blue card

As a coach, the Dane is very cynical about the new rule regarding the blue card. Riemer believes that the responsibility should lie with the coach and staff and not with the player. “Our attitude on the sidelines influences the behavior of players towards the referee. If we guide our players correctly during the match and encourage them in the right way, then a blue card is not necessary. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m not convinced yet.”
