In the Super League, AA Gent did an excellent job in the battle for a place in the top six and participation in Play-off 1. The Ghent women won 3-0 against WS Woluwe and are in a shared fifth place with Racing Genk . Competitor Zulte Waregem did not get further than 1-1 against Charleroi and follows six points from AA Gent.

There are still five matches to be completed in the regular competition. Amber Maximus celebrated her 26th birthday on Friday with two goals. She already has seven competition goals. “Our intention was to score quickly. I saw a goal disallowed early in the match, but that turned out to be just a postponement of execution. I gave us a 2-0 lead with two goals in the second quarter of an hour, after which we no longer had any problems. Substitute Zarah Taillieu recorded the final score fifteen minutes before the end, after only being on the field for five minutes. It is positive that our goalkeeper Riet Maes once again has a clean sheet to her name. Good for the confidence of the entire team. Losing points against WS Woluwe was not an option if we wanted to finish in the top six. Everyone heard that message, which meant we achieved a deserved victory.”

The team of coach Jorn Van Ginderdeuren will travel to KV Mechelen on Saturday, which is in the penultimate place, while Zulte Waregem will meet WS Woluwe on Friday. “In Mechelen we again cannot be satisfied with less than three points,” Maximus continues. “We put pressure on ourselves by losing twice to Zulte Waregem, although that also had a positive side. It was a wake-up call for our group that we have to perform at our best in every match to get points. Otherwise you can lose every match, because at this level you don’t get any gifts. Everyone realizes the importance of participating in Play-off 1. That is ten extra matches against the strongest teams from our country in which we can gain a lot of experience.”

Strengthen cup reputation

AA Gent is also in the quarter-finals of the Belgian Cup. The Buffalos will travel to Sporting Charleroi on February 10. “We kick off as favourites, but a cup match is a different matter than a competition match. The Karolos are a tough team and they will sell their skin dearly at home. However, we could have made a less favorable draw and now we have a unique opportunity to advance to the semi-finals. AA Gent has the reputation of being a good cup team. We will do everything we can to strengthen that good name.”
