The women of Zulte Waregem kept the prospect of a point in sight for a long time when they visited national champions Anderlecht, but in the end they had to leave the victory to the purple and white by the smallest margin. Nevertheless, a hopeful performance for defender Heike Maelfait in view of the important cup match against KV Mechelen.

To maintain the prospect of participating in Play-off 1, Essevee is forced to collect points in the matches against the top teams. That almost worked on the Anderlecht field. “We knew that we would inevitably be forced into defense against their attacking strength,” said Heike Maelfait. “That was also evident in the first half, but thanks to our willpower and fighting spirit we held on well. Then of course you want to maintain that 0-0 in the second half, but on the hour mark we still conceded a goal. We then tried to rebalance the boards by making some tactical shifts. That didn’t work, but there are plenty of positive things to take with you to the cup match. Even in the battle for Play-off 1, with three points behind AA Gent, anything remains possible. We are aware that it will be extremely difficult, but it is ingrained in the DNA of this club to keep fighting until the last breath.”

In the quarter-finals of the Belgian Cup, Essevee seems to have an excellent opportunity on its own field to advance to another round. “We beat KV Mechelen 3-0 at the end of last month, but that offers us no guarantees for Saturday,” Heike Maelfait shuns the role of favorite. “They will be eager to take revenge for that heavy defeat. The stakes are also very high with a place in the semi-finals. I expect a nerve-wracking match. In any case, for us the cup is a goal in itself. We have proven several times this season that we are a team that is difficult to disrupt and that we can make it difficult for any opponent with our never-ending mental strength.”
