8 years and 110 knockout matches: The Champions League has gone penalty-free for too long in the UK

May 28, 2016: The Champions League final between Real and Atlético Madrid is settled on penalties. Believe it or not, it was the last time a Champions League knockout match was decided in a penalty shootout. At least until Tuesday, March 12, 2024, the day when Arsenal defeated the visitors from Porto from the spot.

We had to wait 8 years and 110 games for it. It had been that long since a knockout match in the Champions League treated us to a nail-biting penalty shootout. What a long time ago that was!

To make the statistics even more impressive, we dig a little deeper. If we ignore Atlético Madrid, it has already been since the final of May 19, 2012 that we were awarded penalties. Chelsea, with match winner Didier Drogba, then came out on top. You remember it, even though that was almost twelve years ago.

The last time

We're going back in time. Real and Atlético look each other in the eye at San Siro. The scores are still level after 120 minutes of football, thanks to a late goal by Red Devil Yannick Carrasco. Penalties then.

The Royal eventually wins the Cup with the Big Ears for the eleventh time. The Eleventh is a fact, thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's decisive eleven meter. The Portuguese celebrate in known style with bare torsos.
