Marcos Llorente, who trained and played football at Real Madrid, saved a point for Atlético in the Madrid derby with a header goal in injury time. A painful goal, because the draw (1-1) meant that Real could not benefit from Girona’s loss of points the day before. Axel Witsel was between the lines for the entire match at Atlético, Arthur Vermeeren did not come off the bench.

In the Marilene derby, Real Madrid seemed to benefit from the loss of points to pursuer Girona on Saturday against Real Sociedad (0-0). Until Llorente’s equalizer in the 93rd minute. A hammer blow for competition leader Real, which is still followed by Girona on two points. FC Barcelona (which won 1-3 against Alavés) follows eight, Atlético Madrid ten.

Real Madrid took the lead after 20 minutes through Brahim Diaz. Diaz first lost the ball in the box, Vazquez picked up and tried to reach Bellingham. An Atlético player prevented this, after which the ball ended up at Diaz’s feet again and he finally completed the messy phase.

Atlético Madrid appeared to equalize from a corner five minutes into the second half, but the VAR disallowed the goal. A justified decision, as the images showed. Saul Niguez hindered the goalkeeper from an offside position when Savic headed into goal.

Real Madrid appealed for a penalty a few times, but referee José Sanchez did not want to hear about it. However, there was something wrong with a defensive phase by Savic on Jude Bellingham.

Atlético Madrid coach Simeone made a triple substitution just after the hour mark, but Vermeeren was not among the three that were allowed to come off the bench. The midfielder, who came over from Antwerp, already played a half against Rayo Vallecano four days ago and would not play.

It wasn’t until the 93rd minute that Atlético Madrid found the equalizer they were looking for. Memphis Depay headed a cross from star Savic to Marcus Llorente, who headed the ball under the crossbar: 1-1. At Real they grabbed their heads.
