Saudi Arabia has officially submitted its bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The Saudis are the only remaining candidate after Australia dropped out.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) presented the slogan “Grow. Together” and the logo of the candidacy, which consists of colorful ribbons, forming the numbers three and four. “We believe the time is right for Saudi Arabia to host the World Cup,” said federation president Yasser Al Misehal. “Our candidacy is based on a love for the sport and the desire to see football grow in every corner of the world. We want to honor football culture and share our country with the rest of the world. The rapid transformation of the country is the driving force behind our candidacy.”

The country has been investing heavily in football for several years and also had its sights set on the 2030 World Cup, but that went to Spain, Portugal and Morocco at the beginning of October. The first three matches were awarded to Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, in honor of the centenary of the World Cup. This means that the World Cup will take place on three different continents: Europe, Africa and South America. Due to the allocation of the 2026 edition to North and Central America with Canada, the US and Mexico, it was in any case Asia and Oceania’s turn in 2034.

At the end of October, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore withdrew their candidacy for 2034, leaving the way open for Saudi Arabia. Whether the Saudis will actually take over the edition will be announced at the end of 2024.
