During the third and final group match in group A, Ivory Coast suffered its second consecutive defeat at the Africa Cup. This time Equatorial Guinea was too strong with no less than 4-0.

Three minutes before half-time, Carlos Akapo’s cross bounced into the goal via Emilio Nsue’s leg, but in the final quarter it really became a disaster for the host country. Pablo Ganet first blasted a free kick over the Ivorian wall past Yahia Fofana, barely two minutes later Nsue signed the Ivorians’ death sentence with his second of the evening. The host country also defended too weakly in the final phase, allowing Jannick Buyla to score the heavy 4-0 score. For the Ivorians, Christian Kouamé (ex-Anderlecht) was an old acquaintance at the kick-off, Simon Adingra (ex-Union) came on just before the end. Lazare Amani (Union) and Odilon Kossounou (ex-Club Brugge) did not leave the bench.

Nigeria won with the smallest difference against Guinea Bissau (0-1). An own goal by Grandpa Sangante was responsible for the Nigerian victory, a later goal by Victor Osimhen (ex-Charleroi) was disallowed due to hand play.

In the winning camp, Moses Simon (ex-Ghent) also completed the match, Club midfielder Raphael Onyedika got half an hour of playing time. Paul Onuachu (ex-Genk), William Troost-Ekong (ex-Gent) and Terem Moffi (ex-Kortrijk) remained glued to the bench for ninety minutes. At Guinea Bissau, Zulte striker Zinho Gano played the entire first half.

Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria both took 7 out of 9 in group A, but the big win means Equatorial Guinea still ends up at the top. Ivory Coast is third with three points, but has to wait and see whether it has been able to get into the four best third places out of the six groups.
