The winner has to compete against the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (WTA 18), who is the eighteenth seed free in the opening round.

Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 85) takes to the track against the American Claire Liu (WTA 56). The 28-year-old from Grimberg has also never played against her 22-year-old opponent before. Whoever pulls the longest straw, a very tough assignment awaits in round two against the Polish number 1 in the world Iga Swiatek, the title defender on the Californian hard court.

Just like Van Uytvanck, Maryna Zanevska (WTA 78) meets an American, Lauren Davis (WTA 47). Both 29-year-olds cross swords for the first time. The Tunisian fourth seed Ons Jabeur (WTA 4) awaits the winner in the 1/32nd finals.

With Ysaline Bonaventure (WTA 84), a fourth Belgian may be on the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open. She must win her second and final qualifying match against the German Eva Lys (WTA 118).

Last year Elise Mertens reached the third round in Indian Wells. Van Uytvanck was eliminated in the second round, Zanevska had to pack up after one match.
