Paul Nardi didn’t get a lot of work to do against Anderlecht, but with a few important saves, the Frenchman was finally able to claim a leading role in Ghent’s victory: “This victory is therefore very important. I didn’t have that much work, but I still had to intervene a few times.”

“This was finally a real top match that we brought to a successful conclusion. Moreover, after Friday evening’s surprising result, we knew that we could do a good job if we won the ranking”, Paul Nardi spontaneously referred to Club Brugge’s 3-0 defeat at Ostend.

The Buffalos immediately approached to within one point of blue-black: “We now indeed succeed in narrowing the gap with them again. That’s nice! We had hoped for this, but they undoubtedly did not expect this. It was obviously not an easy task for us to win here because Anderlecht made it quite difficult for us. Finally, there was that fabulous goal from Gift.”

“That goal was insanely beautiful. No goalkeeper can save that one. Not even the best goalkeeper in the world. No, Thibaut Courtois had also had no chance. I saw how Verbruggen tried to stretch, but the ball eventually went in the side. Terribly frustrating for a goalkeeper but fantastic fun for us of course. Nice to be able to experience such a goal, but for my colleague it was a nightmare.”

The atmosphere in the Ghelamco Arena, filled with almost 18,000 fans, was naturally elated after the match: “That atmosphere really helps us. There was also a nice atmosphere against Leuven. At the European home games it is sometimes a bit less, but we also understand that due to the late starting time it is not always obvious for our fans. We just hope that they will also be at the appointment en masse in the coming weeks.”

“The championship is important to us. This victory is therefore very important. I didn’t have much work but still had to intervene a few times. In the first half I tried to help my defense but the ball stayed just outside the box. Ngadeu tried to do his best but in the end Kamil (Piatkowski) was able to turn the ball in front of the line. It’s nice when your defenders come to your aid like that (laughs).”

Before the break, Nardi also had to work: “Fortunately, Dreyer missed his shot, so it wasn’t that easy in the end, but a little later there was still a dangerous position where I and Nurio had to work. Then I could save with my legs. The clean sheet – number nine in the Jupiler Pro League, not bad in eighteen league matches – is in and that is especially important for the team!”

“Being able to keep a clean sheet and win is very gratifying. Now we must not lose points unnecessarily against supposedly lesser opponents. We never underestimate anyone and always give our all. On Friday we saw how a smaller team can also deliver great performances. We noticed that ourselves against Kortrijk. Will I play on Thursday? No idea, I’ll do my best if I can play but in the end it’s the coach who decides!”
