Club YLA showed on Saturday afternoon with a spectacular 5-3 victory against undefeated leader OH Leuven that they can aim high this season. Blauw-zwart saw its lead erased no fewer than three times, but in the end the fighting spirit and efficiency of the Bruges team was decisive.

While the 5-3 win against OHL is seen as surprising to many observers, this is not at all the case for the players and staff of Club YLA. “We believed very strongly that we could keep the three points at home and we kicked off with that mindset,” says attacker Celien Guns, who paved the way for blue-black’s resounding victory with her opening goal. “It was taken into account that OHL would claim possession of the ball. For us it was important to play well-organized football and choose our moments. I was able to open the score myself via a rehearsed number on the corner kick and then we were off for an intense match that was constantly going up and down.”

An avoidable goal in injury time of the first half (2-2) seemed to be a turning point in the match, but Club YLA thought completely differently about that. “We felt during the first half that we could hurt OHL and continued to fight for every ball after the break,” Celien Guns continues. “We knew that OHL was going to do everything it could to get that win, but at no point were we actually outplayed. Apart from a few crosses and stationary phases, we didn’t really get into any problems. On the contrary, it was our attacking force that decided the match in the final phase. Angel Kerkhove had already scored twice, and with two goals in money time, Davinia Vanmechelen also showed her best form. Equally impressive is that the entire team has carried out the coach’s tasks down to the smallest detail, and then you see what we are capable of.”

Confidence boost

Even more than with the current third place in the standings, Celien Guns is delighted with the confidence boost provided by Saturday’s victory. “Not that we doubted it ourselves, but such a result against perhaps the best team in the country is very gratifying. We must cherish that feeling and work hard again from Monday towards the match against KV Mechelen next weekend. Everyone has now seen what we have to offer, it is up to us to prove this week after week.”
