“Whether this was the turning point? That’s too early to say now,” heavily troubled Zulte Waregem shows with a difficult victory at Club NXT that it is not dead yet

Roeselare

Oof! After the difficult 1-3 victory at Club NXT, Zulte Waregem finally knows what winning is again. The team of the much-troubled coach Vincent Euvrard showed that it is certainly not dead for direct promotion to the Jupiler Pro League. “Hopefully we can now achieve another series.”

Vincent Euvrard played a high game last week by taking on Essevee’s supporters, but most wrinkles were neatly ironed out. On Thursday, a delegation of fans came to training to support the players and staff. And the visitors section in The Nest in Roeselare was even completely sold out on Friday evening. Enough reasons for the players to respond. Captain Jelle Vossen was back from injury and came into the starting line-up again at the expense of Matheus Machado. Euvrard was hard to spot on the bench. But anyone who thought that the ex-coach of RWDM had been unexpectedly fired after last week’s riot was wrong. Euvrard was suspended after his exclusion against Lommel last week and simply sat in the stands.

Essevee had the upper hand before half time, but they were unable to score against the young Club with Briton Josef Bursik in goal for the second time in a row. Furthermore, the people of Bruges had been reinforced by A-core players Homma-Barbera, which meant that the duo Faraas-Furo, who excelled last week against Francs Borains, were on the bench. Chemsdine Talbi also made his return after a long absence. Club NXT certainly had opportunities in the first half, but was unable to convert them when the home team came close to Essevee goalkeeper Ortwin De Wolf several times.

Dream start after rest

Immediately after half-time, Zulte Waregem got off to a dream start. On a pass from Abdoulaye Traoré, Stavros Gavriel was able to just run the ball into the goal, even though Jelle Vossen also gave it a tap. The second half then proceeded evenly, but ten minutes before the end, Vossen was able to save the ball with his head on a corner. Lenn De Smet seemed to disrupt the party with the tying goal, but an own goal by Kyriani Sabbe made it 1-3. “Hopefully we can now set a series,” said Jelle Vossen after the satisfying victory. “Although we now know that this is not so obvious in this competition, where everyone can win against everyone.”

In any case, Christian Brüls thought it was a deserved victory. “We should have finished it earlier and it’s a shame that we almost got ourselves into trouble with that goal,” said the midfielder. “We have to be careful with that. With some bad luck it could have been disappointing again.”

Stress for your own people?

In any case, it was again an item in the conversations on Friday evening among everyone who cares about Essevee. Why doesn’t it work at home? Brüls: “I have no problem with it myself and I enjoy playing at home in front of 6,000 people. That’s more fun than being in an empty stadium, but you have to be able to deal with the pressure and stress. That is why we as older people must guide the young people in that area. But was this the turning point? That’s too early to say now. Our problem is known and that is those home matches. Well, next week we play away again, at Francs Borains, and maybe that won’t be so bad. I hear from the guys at NXT that it is a bad field and a non-professional accommodation, but we will have to transfer there too.”

The final words were given by interim coach Jonathan Alves, who replaced the suspended Euvrard. “We had prepared this match well with the entire staff and were prepared for everything,” said Alves. “There are now 24 points left to earn. We still have everything to win and now we have to show that we are there.”
