AA Gent announced on Tuesday that captain Sven Kums has extended his expiring contract for a year. Next season will be his eighth in the colors of the Buffaloes. The 36-year-old midfielder indicated on the club website that he had no doubts about a longer stay in Ghent.

“When I told my children that I would stay in Ghent for another year, they were very happy,” said Kums. “Just like me, they feel at home at KAA Gent. This club has become part of my family. More than 300 matches for Ghent, then blue and white is in your heart. It was my wish to be able to stay here and I want to give the very best of myself for the supporters next season.”

Kums has played 311 official matches for AA Gent, 38 of which this season. He has been sidelined since the beginning of February with an ankle injury and the Buffaloes feel that on the field. They have fallen to eighth place in the rankings in recent weeks. Next Sunday, on the final matchday of the regular competition of the Jupiler Pro League, Ghent must beat Charleroi and hope for a misstep by the competition to still gain a place in the Champions’ play-offs.

Next season will be Kums’ sixth in a row in the AA Gent shirt. The stylish midfielder is in his second period in the Arteveldestad. He previously played for the Buffaloes in the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons. He won a title (2015) and a cup (2022) with Ghent. During his career he also played for Lierse, Kortrijk, the Dutch Heerenveen, Zulte Waregem, the Italian Udinese and Anderlecht.
