Hugo Broos’ fairy tale continues: South Africa qualifies for the Africa Cup semi-finals after goalkeeper stops four (!) penalties

Hugo Broos has qualified for the semi-finals of the Africa Cup with South Africa. After no goals had been scored in 120 minutes of football, South Africa won 2-1 against Cape Verde in a penalty shootout. Broos saw his goalkeeper become a hero of the nation. Ronwen Williams saved no fewer than four penalties.

Williams immediately took the first penalty from Bebé, a former Manchester United player. And Willy Semedo and Laros Duarte also failed face to face with the South Africa captain. Because Zakhele Zapasi grazed the top of the crossbar and Aubray Modiba shot at the keeper, there remained a glimmer of hope for Cape Verde. At the decisive moment, Patrick Andrade hoped to surprise Williams by choosing the right side, but again Williams was sharp. His fourth save secured the victory.

South Africa will play Nigeria for a place in the final on Wednesday. The country can qualify for the final of the African national championship for a third time. In 1996 it also won (2-0 against Tunisia), two years later it became runner-up (2-0 defeat against Egypt). In the other semi-final, host country Ivory Coast faces Congo. The final will be played next Sunday. Broos has already won the Africa Cup. He did this in 2017 as coach of Cameroon.
