The first trophy in six years: Manchester United beat Newcastle in the final and win their sixth League Cup

Manchester United won its first prize at Wembley on Sunday under coach Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the League Cup final. It is Man Utd’s sixth League Cup victory.

The Mancunians already put the game in a final fold before the break. A header from Casemiro and an own goal from Sven Botman, which deflected a shot from man-in-form Marcus Rashford, gave them a double lead. Newcastle insisted after the break, but a connection goal was not forthcoming.

United’s last League Cup win was in 2017. That season, the Red Devils also won the Europa League, their last two trophies to date. Man United therefore had to wait a total of six years for a new price. It was the first time since 1983 that it took them so long to raise a trophy.

Erik ten Hag seems to have his team on track in recent months. Man Utd is firmly third in the Premier League, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal. In the Europa League, it eliminated FC Barcelona last week and United is also still active in the FA Cup.
