BEVEREN-WAAS

The East Flemish derby between SK Deinze and SK Beveren ended in a goalless draw. Both teams kept each other in balance in terms of ball possession, but the Waaslanders came closest to a goal. The yellow and blue could only score five times in seven games and are unable to get out of the basement of the rankings. Deinze suffered his first loss of points at home.

Beveren coach Wim De Decker made three changes compared to last weekend’s lost home match against FC Liège. Captain Sheldon Bateau (injured), Jay-Dee Geusens and David Hrncar were replaced by Everton Luiz, Taofeek Ismaheel and Jakov Filipovic. Alexander Corryn then dropped out with a cruciate ligament injury and was out for many months. De Decker and T2 Flavien Le Postollec faced their ex-club.

Deinze started furiously and almost punished a misunderstanding in the Wase defense in the first minute. Beveren was the equal afterwards and threatened mainly through Yousef Salech and Goduine Koyalipou. A goal by the latter around the half hour mark was disallowed for offside. Two minutes later, Salech was unlucky with a shot against the crossbar. Beveren came close to scoring three times in the fourth quarter. A cross from Anthony Limbombe flew back into the field via the post, Koyalipou, who broke through, did not get past goalkeeper Miras and the latter also deflected Koyalipou’s shot from the crossbar just before the hour mark. Goalkeeper Beau Reus was not surprised in the last half hour and took his third clean sheet out.

Do not hesitate

“We had the feeling before kick-off that we would win,” said visitor Limbombe. “That confidence never disappeared during the match and in the end we always deserved the three points based on the number of chances. We were better than Deinze but again had bad luck in finishing. Deinze’s goalkeeper and the goal post kept us from scoring a deserved goal. It is also a matter of automatisms. We still have to learn to find and sense each other better, but we are making progress.”

“We face two difficult assignments with matches against Zulte Waregem and Club NXT, but we can make it difficult for everyone,” Limbombe continued. “We must have confidence in our qualities. We don’t have to talk about our ambitions now, but keep working hard. One win in seven games is not enough and is not in proportion to our performance. We found the path to goal too difficult in recent weeks and needed too many opportunities to reward ourselves. However, we don’t have to doubt ourselves. There is sufficient maturity and footballing ability in the group to continue its way up the rankings. The atmosphere in the group is still great.”
