RWDM and Standard forget to finish in the second half (despite a brief flare-up) and keep each other at a draw

Neither RWDM nor Standard have been able to push each other into even deeper trouble. The Rouches quickly took the lead, but RWDM also came alongside quite quickly. After a quiet period, both teams saw a substitute score, but it remained a point-sharing match (2-2). RWDM remains camped in the danger zone, Standard is not much higher with barely three points left.

The RWDM-Standard poster that is called a cellar squatter, who would have thought that a few decades ago… Well, the figures speak for themselves. 21 and 24 points respectively, 20 and 25 goals scored respectively… after 23 match days. With a win, RWDM could push the Rouches into the red zone. Cláudio Caçapa counted on three new men for this. In addition to the suspended Pierre Dwomoh (yellow) and Jeff Reine-Adélaïde (red), Ilay Camara also had to move into the Brazilian’s line-up. The trio Shuto Abe-Xavier Mercier-Mickaël Biron replaced him. Ivan Leko did not change anything compared to Antwerp.

RWDM started enthusiastically: via Carlos Alberto and Mickaël Biron the ball ended up quickly towards Arnaud Bodart’s goal, but the referee had ruled it offside anyway. The Molenbeek players even started so enthusiastically that Tayo Adaramola in his enthusiasm almost caused a penalty foul on Moussa Djenepo, who was happy to drop.

Intermediate step skipped

Standard also wanted to immediately show that they had come for nothing less than victory. William Balikwhisha set up a counter, but his shot was both too weakly kicked and too poorly aimed. But look, after ten minutes it was a prize through Wilfried Kanga: the two-time Ivorian international could have crossed, but skipped that intermediate step and gave his team an early lead.

RWDM was not necessarily upset. Adaramola pushed wide after a good ball from Mercier. The 34-year-old Frenchman no longer seems to be one of the best physically, but he is touch of genius he still hasn’t lost it. Junior Marsoni Sambu Mansoni also did not lose quality after his months-long injury. The Liège native, accompanied by Carlos Alberto, went deep on the right and crossed well. His ball crossed the sixteen, after which Mickaël Biron blasted home. Just in time, because the lights had already gone out a few times in the RWDM defense, without the Standard attackers being able to do anything with it.

Kanga immediately tried to put his nose to the window again, but David Sousa showed with a strong one bodycheck indicates that the Molenbeek residents were playing with the knife between their teeth. Shortly before half an hour, the home team played around Standard’s sixteen for several minutes, but this ultimately did not result in a second goal. Standard, on the other hand, did not make use of the enormous counter opportunities that were available. Kanga was close to 1-2 a few times, but after a weak ten last minutes the first half was canceled with a 1-1 score.

Result remains the same

Things were a bit sloppy in the first half for both teams, but it was quite an entertaining first half. Standard immediately contributed to a ditto second half, especially through Kanga. After a few minutes, the loanee from Hertha tested BSC home goalkeeper Théo Defourny. A few minutes later, Kanga even made the nets shake, but referee Put had ruled it offside.

RWDM also did not give in yet. Arnaud Bodart had to put in a lot of effort during attempts by Carlos Alberto and Mickaël Biron. Xavier Mercier could have scored on the rebound – Bodart could never have been ready in time after his good save – but the Frenchman decided to go over.

After the hour, both teams fell asleep a bit. With the double substitution of Makhtar Gueye and Carlos Alberto for debutants Frederic Soelle Soelle and Malcolm Ebiowei, the sting was completely removed from the match. Ivan Leko opted for some extra defensive security by bringing in defender Jonathan Panzo for Isaac Price. We were no longer presented with opportunities… until the recently substituted Ilay Camara caused delirium in the Edmond Machtens Stadium. He surprised Arnaud Bodart with a low shot. The Molenbeek joy did not last long, because Kelvin Fossey – someone who had only just appeared! – immediately backfired. The substitutes shook up the match a bit, but the result ultimately remained the same: both clubs are doing a very bad job with this umpteenth loss of points in a row.
