In 2023, football clubs worldwide spent a record amount on the transfer market, with an injection of 9.63 billion dollars (approximately 8.89 billion euros). That is two billion dollars more than the previous record set in 2019, according to figures published by the World Football Association FIFA on Tuesday.

The amount also represents a significant increase compared to 2022 (+48.1 percent), when spending on the transfer market rose again after two years of decline, due to the corona pandemic. The ten largest transfers account for 10 percent of the total transfer fees paid in 2023. These include Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid, Enzo Fernandez from Benfica to Chelsea, Harry Kane from Tottenham to Bayern Munich and Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt to Paris Saint-Germain.

As in 2022, English clubs, led by Chelsea, were the biggest spenders with almost three billion dollars (2.96 billion euros) paid out over the whole of 2023. In addition to Chelsea, PSG, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are among the five clubs that will have spent the most on the transfer market in 2023. German clubs, on the other hand, received the highest total in the world, with transfer income exceeding $1.2 billion. According to the report, the Belgian teams spent 241.5 million and earned 355.4 million.

The FIFA report also highlights the “impressive growth” of women’s football in terms of investment in the transfer market. In 2023, 623 professional clubs were involved in international transfers, compared to 507 in 2022. A total of 1,888 international transfers of professional players were registered that year, compared to 1,571 in 2022.
