VIDEO. Arsenal coach Arteta is furious after questionable VAR decisions in defeat at Newcastle: “This is embarrassing, I am ashamed to be part of this”

Arsenal lost 1-0 on the pitch to Newcastle United after several questionable decisions were made – or not made – by the VAR. For example, the VAR did not intervene when Newcastle player Bruno Guimarães hit the back of the head of Jorginho and the 1-0 also had a serious smell.

The only goal of the match was scored by Anthony Gordon in the 64th minute. It took several minutes before the goal was approved, because the VAR had to check no fewer than three things: whether the ball had not gone over the sideline just before the cross was given to Joelinton, whether Joelinton had not made a mistake in the aerial duel with Arsenal – defender Gabriel and finally whether goal scorer Gordon was offside. Please judge for yourself.

The first point of discussion: was the ball outside or not?

The second point of discussion: did Joelinton make a mistake in the header?

The third point of discussion: was Gordon offside? According to Sky Sports, VAR could not intervene at this stage as there was no camera image of the moment Joelinton headed the ball.

VAR also came under fire in the first half, when a Newcastle player hit Bruno Guimarães Jorginho on the back of the head.

At Newcastle they wanted a red card for this mistake by Kai Havertz:

Due to the defeat – the first of the season – Arsenal is now third in the standings. Newcastle have four points less than the Gunners and are sixth.

Mikel Arteta is furious: “This is a shame”

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was furious afterwards: “It is embarrassing what happened here. How this goal counts, in the Premier League, which we say is the best league in the world. I have been in this country for twenty years and now I am ashamed. It’s a shame and there’s too much at stake for this. (…) I feel ashamed to be part of this.”
