Australian football women criticize FIFA just before the World Cup: women want equal pay with men worldwide

Australia’s national football women have criticized the World Football Association (FIFA) for the prize money that will be awarded at the upcoming World Cup – which starts on Thursday in Australia and New Zealand. That is four times less than for men.

In a video on Twitter, the 23 internationals oppose the unequal treatment of men and women. Midfielder Tameka Yallop explains that FIFA still has a long way to go towards equal pay, which is already a fact in Australia for the ‘Matildas’, as the national women’s team is called.

“Collective bargaining has ensured that we now play on the same terms as the Socceroos (the Australian men’s team, ed.), with one exception,” said Yallop. “FIFA still only offers women a quarter of the prize money that men get for the same performance.”

FIFA has about 98 million euros to distribute among the 32 women’s teams at the upcoming World Cup. At the last World Cup in Qatar, the men received about 392 million euros.
