Beerschot fan was on his way to Lommel on foot for a challenge: “I was already in Geel when I heard that the match had been cancelled”

Tonight’s competition match between Lommel and Beerschot is cancelled. According to the Pro League, the turf in Lommel is still unplayable. Annoying for the Beerschot supporters who wanted to make the move. Not least for Dimitri Janssens. He was on his way to Lommel for a challenge. Dimitri was already halfway through when he received the message that the match would not take place.

Dimitri Janssens left Antwerp at 3:10 am on Thursday night for a journey of 69 kilometers to the Lommel Sovereign Stadium. He was challenged last week after the match against RSCA Futures by a friend from supporters club Bar TGV. “Last season, Lommel was the first trip without a bus combination (where supporters are required to take buses to the home team’s stadium, ed.). And so I joked with my friend that we should actually do that trip on foot. But he soon backed down. And after the match against the promises of Anderlecht he started to challenge me. He said that I would never manage to walk to Lommel. After a few pints I was eager to prove him wrong and decided to take up the challenge.”

At a café in Geel

No sooner said than done. Dimitri, who already had some experience with long walks, took off like a rocket. He arrived in Geel around 2 p.m. “I had covered almost 50 kilometers at that point. I didn’t look at my phone that often while walking. I didn’t even have 4G everywhere. But when I arrived in Geel, I suddenly received a lot of messages. Match cancelled. Sucks, huh. But nothing can be done about it. I happened to be close to a café and suddenly ordered a pint here. Will I still walk back? No, I can’t find the motivation for that anymore. Kim, the owner of Café Atletiek, is coming to pick me up.”

It is not yet clear when the Lommel-Beerschot match will be rescheduled. But there is a good chance that Dimitri will try again. “I just like to walk. Every few months I do one of those extremely long walks. If it fits at all, I’ll try again next time. But hopefully they will decide a little earlier whether or not the match can be played,” Dimitri laughs.
