Zulte Waregem was able to win again on Friday evening on the 22nd matchday in the Challenger Pro League, after two defeats in a row. Essevee won 1-3 at Club NXT.
After a goalless first half, Zulte Waregem took the lead at the beginning of the second half thanks to a goal by Stavros Gabriel (49.). After the 0-2 by Jelle Vossen (80.), Lenn De Smet (83.) seemed to breathe new life into the match, but an own goal by Kyriani Sabbe (85.) secured the victory for the West Flemish .
Lierse Kempenzonen also managed to take three points for the first time since December 3. The Pallieters won 3-1 against Jong Genk. Japanese newcomer Naoki Kumata was given his first starting spot at Jong Genk on Friday and scored the opening goal after 34 minutes. Joeri Poelmans (42.) tied the score again moments later, after which Eric Ocansey (66.) + (90’+4) scored two goals after the break to make it 3-1.
Thanks to the victory, Zulte Waregem (39 points) climbs to a provisional second place in the rankings, three points behind leader Beerschot (42), which will still be in action this weekend. Club NXT is eleventh with 24 points, two more than first pursuer Lierse (22). Jong Genk is safely in the bottom of the rankings in ninth place with 28 points.
