Union has now been unbeaten in the competition for ten games in a row, can’t that make the people of Brussels float? “The balance between self-confidence and arrogance is extremely important”

With 28 out of 30 in its last 10 matches, Union is on a great run in the Jupiler Pro League. Points were only lost against Ghent, the other 9 matches were won. The people of Brussels do not seem to be out of control for the time being, but could such a winning streak not cause a little too much confidence to creep into the group?

Although almost everyone thought at the start of the season that Union had lost too many players, the people of Brussels are doing brilliantly again. Partly thanks to the series of 28 out of 30, Union is comfortably in the lead, four points ahead of Anderlecht and even nine points ahead of Ghent. It suggests the best for Union, which is really after a prize this year.

The question is whether there could also be a danger in that long series without defeat: some might think that they are invincible and therefore become a little more nonchalant, but that is certainly not the case with Union. “The mental aspect is very important in this group,” says trainer Alexander Blessin, who has a very strong group in that area. “Every training I still have the feeling that the hunger to win is present among my players. If that were not the case, I would of course speak to them about it. It is important to find a good balance between self-confidence and arrogance at this time. For the time being, I think we are succeeding in that, because I definitely don’t have the feeling that my team is arrogant.”

Although Union has been unbeaten in the competition for ten games, it is not all roses and moonshine. In Europe, for example, things are a bit more difficult this season, Union, for example, currently only has five points after five games and wintering in the Europa League will be an extremely difficult task. For that, Union must certainly win against Liverpool on Thursday, and it must hope that Toulouse loses to LASK. “But I don’t want to think too much about that match yet,” said the 50-year-old German. “It is indeed a big European competition, but I have asked my players and staff to maintain focus. First there is the match against Charleroi on Sunday. If we also want to play in Europe next year, it is these kinds of matches in the competition that we definitely have to win. From Monday we can think about Liverpool, but now all the focus must be on Charleroi.”

Treacherous match

In Charleroi, Union will be looking for its eleventh competition match without defeat, but that is certainly not a match that was won in advance. “I still remember that we had a tough time against them at home,” said Blessin, who still remembers the 3-1 victory. “It may be that there is not too much confidence in that team now, but that can be both positive and negative. Everyone wants to beat us, so we certainly won’t get any gifts and we will have to fight for every ball.”
