Women’s World Cup is a huge success! First match in Australia moves to larger stadium

Due to the high demand for tickets, the first match on Australian soil of next summer’s Women’s World Cup (20 July – 20 August) will be played in a larger stadium. The Australian Football Association announced this on Tuesday.

Instead of the new Allianz Stadium, which has a capacity of 42,500, Stadium Australia – also in Sydney – will host the Australia-Ireland game on July 20. The former Olympic stadium can accommodate more than 82,000 spectators. FIFA has already approved the move.

The World Cup, which also takes place in New Zealand, opens earlier in the day in Auckland. After the opening ceremony, the first World Cup match between New Zealand and Norway will take place in Eden Park.

The World Cup final will also be played at Stadium Australia on August 20. (belga)
