After the departure of Lyle Foster and Halil Akbunar, Westerlo has its first winter acquisition. The Japanese Yusuke Matsuo is rented from Urawa Red Diamonds until the end of the season, with an option to purchase.
Matsuo’s transfer has been in the air for some time and has now been officially completed. The 25-year-old Matsuo took physical and medical tests last week and started training for the first time on Friday. He is on loan until the end of the season, with an option to purchase for two years.
Matsuo has to accommodate Akbunar’s departure in Westerlo. Last season he was in the J1 League, the Japanese first division, good for four goals and four assists in 25 games. In the Asian Champions League, in which Urawa Red Diamonds qualified for the final (contested on April 29 and May 6, 2023, ed.), he found his way to goal six times and delivered two decisive passes.
With the arrival of Matsuo, Westerlo provides a first: he is the very first Japanese in ‘t Kuipje. The club is still looking for a replacement for Foster, but does not intend to do “crazy things” in January.
