Who else than Zinho Gano will help Zulte Waregem to a difficult victory against Club Liège and the leadership position: “Not concerned with the top scorer’s title, but with becoming champion”

Zulte Waregem is in the lead in the Challenger Pro League. After a particularly difficult match against Club Liège, Essevee kept the three points at home thanks to the inevitable Zinho Gano. “I am now in the lead with Bertaccini in the top scorer’s standings, but that is not what I am concerned about. We just want to become champions,” the match winner sounded matter-of-factly afterwards.

No, the home fans were not spoiled before half time. Traoré produced an excellent long-range effort on the fifteen minute mark and, after an excellent deviation from Gano, the Ivorian shot over the goal from close range. Yet there was quite a bit of grumbling at halftime. “We had quite enough options, but you also know that Liège has quite a nice striker running around,” Ruud Vormer also realized the ‘danger Bertaccini’.

The local defense indeed had more than its hands full with the Bertacinni storm and the visitors were also able to cause unrest in the home team’s penalty area from the flanks – more than Essevee coach Euvrard would have liked. “We didn’t put enough pressure on the right before halftime, which meant we kept being shorthanded. Decostere had to put more pressure there, while Tambedou had to take over his man,” Vormer knew where things went wrong before half time.

In short, unlike the away match in Beveren, Zulte Waregem was anything but convincing before half-time on Saturday evening: “We pointed this out during half-time and you noticed that it had an effect,” Vormer added.

“It went much better with that 4-4-2”

However, there was no immediate change in the game pattern after the break. Euvrard intervened and brought Machado and Ndour for Derijck and Traoré, while he opted for a four-man variant at the back. “Things indeed went much better with that 4-4-2. You noticed that well,” Vormer grinned knowingly.

Machado’s contribution in particular did not go unnoticed. After one of his rushes, Vormer got into scoring position, but Debaty kept the Dutchman from scoring. Moments later, Machado threw the ball into the box again and this time Gano neatly tapped in, his seventh competition goal of the season. “It’s nice to get the ball played like that. With my size 47.5 it is just important to hit that ball well,” Gano said afterwards.

Club Liège continued to push, but Essevee barely survived. The last feat belonged to Machado, but after an unlikely rush he decided just wide. “I’m not even angry that he didn’t pass the ball to me. It would simply have been a world goal. It’s a shame that the ball didn’t go in,” concluded a forgiving Gano.
