Lille United did not enjoy the move to City Pirates much. The people of Kempen seemed to be on their way to an easy victory against the owner of the red lantern, but ultimately had to settle for a division of points. “If we play this match ten times, we will win eight times.”

“We played really well in the first half. The 0-2 halftime score was not even an exaggeration. We gave nothing away and hit the target wood a few more times,” says Stig Cools. A double lead against the bottom line means that the hardest part seems to be behind us. Things turned out differently in an ice-cold Jef Mermans stadium. “It was important not to let them get into the game after the break and we failed to do that,” said the Lille United defender. “We found it more difficult to come under pressure, but we still managed to take a 1-3 lead. It is no excuse, but at times it was like skating on the frozen artificial grass field.” And it was the home team that dealt with the difficult circumstances best. “It is not the first time this season, but we conceded two more goals in the final phase. These are two lost points, we failed to close the match after the 1-3. If we play this match ten times, we will leave the field with a victory eight times. Their own fault, although City Pirates also deserve kudos for the way they continued to believe in it. We even escaped defeat in the final phase,” Cools concludes. Lille has the chance to flush the hangover on Wednesday. Then Jong KV Mechelen comes to visit for a catch-up match. Lille will not be able to rely on the suspended Stig Cools.
