The 31-year-old Monegask seemed to be just short of returning a smash in the decisive third set, with a 3-1 lead. The only option was to throw his racket at the ball. To his own surprise – and that of his Polish colleagues and opponents – a direct hit followed that was so sharp that Salisbury could not get the ball back over the net. “Madhouse!”, the official Australian Open account hurled into the world via Twitter.

Nys and Zielinksi eventually won the match in the third round 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 6-2. On Tuesday, the duo also defeated the French Benjamin Bonzi Arthur Rinderknech (6-1, 6-4) and qualified for the semi-finals. A duel with Jérémy Chardy and Fabrice Martin, also from France, awaits.
