Why Victoria Azarenka wears PSG jersey at Australian Open

Anyone who watched the Australian Open last week will have been surprised when Belarusian tennis star Victoria Azarenka celebrated her victories in a match shirt from football club PSG. After her victory against the American Jessica Pegula on Tuesday, Azarenka again showed off in a shirt of the French champion. But why exactly?

“I’ve been supporting PSG since 2012 when Beckham signed for them. I’ve been a fan for a long time and have been to many of their matches,” Azarenka told Eurosport cameras last week.

That love for the football club from Paris appears to have been taken over by her seven-year-old son Leo, who travels with her on tour. “He saw me with the jersey and wanted one too, so we wear the same. His dream is to play for PSG. I’m a soccer mom now and I love that. I am also very loud about it and I am absolutely not ashamed to shout for him.”

The 33-year-old Azarenka defeated the 28-year-old American Jessica Pegula (WTA 3), the third seed, in her quarterfinal on Tuesday. It became 6-4 and 6-1 after an hour and 36 minutes. To advance to the final, 24th seed Azarenka must pass Kazakhstan Elena Rybakina (WTA 25).
