Steve Darcis wants to become the new Davis Cup captain: “Everyone knows that the Davis Cup has always been important to me”

Steve Darcis has indicated on Tuesday in the margins of a press conference of the French-speaking tennis league (AFT) in Louvain-la-Neuve that he is interested in the position of Belgian Davis Cup captain. On Monday, current Davis Cup captain Johan Van Herck announced that he would retire at the end of 2023 after twelve years of employment.

“I had Johan on the phone two days ago and then he informed me that he would stop at the end of the year,” said the Liège former player. “The Davis Cup has always been very important to me. Everyone knows that. I am therefore interested in the position of captain. But let’s be clear: only after Johan announced that he would stop at the end of the year. I have always had a lot of respect for Johan and vice versa.”

The 38-year-old Darcis was an important player in the Belgian Davis Cup team that reached the finals in 2015 and 2017. “The federations (AFT and Tennis Vlaanderen, ed.) Will now consult, and the players will also be involved”, he continued. “And then I hope that the choice falls on me.”

The Belgian men will travel to South Korea next week to complete the qualifications for the final phase of the Davis Cup in the weekend of 4 and 5 February. With a win, the Belgians qualify for the group stage of the Finals in September.
