The Belgian professional clubs have suffered a record loss for the second year in a row. Our editors learned this from various sources. Last year, our professional football recorded a record loss of 156 million euros and this time our professional clubs will be in the red by about 20 percent more. The loss in the 2022/2023 financial year is gradually approaching 200 million euros.

It was not a report to write home about last year: it was then announced that our Belgian professional clubs had suffered a record loss of 156 million euros in the 2021/2022 financial year. They went deeper into the red than during the difficult corona season.

Belgian professional football is now suffering a record loss for the second year in a row. These are the figures for the 2022/2023 financial year, which therefore relate to last season. Not all annual accounts have been received yet, but according to our information, the professional clubs are still about 20 percent more in the red. The loss is gradually approaching 200 million euros.

Just like last year, the Pro League again refers to the Football First plan with stricter financial rules for the clubs, which was launched last season. That long-term plan is paying off. We learn that the equity of almost all Belgian professional clubs has increased. That was necessary, because clubs with negative equity must do 20 percent better in that area every year by June 30 than the previous year. Otherwise points will be deducted.

This increase in equity can mainly be explained by the many capital increases that have been implemented. According to the Financial Fair Play of the Pro League, a club is allowed to make a loss of five million euros over three financial years, but that ‘acceptable loss’ may be increased by capital increases. That’s what happened often in 2022/20203.

The Pro League will make the figures public in mid-February and more details will be announced.
