The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) appointed Vladimir Petkovic as the new national coach on Thursday. The sixty-year-old Swiss takes over from the Algerian Djamel Belmadi, who was fired last month after the elimination of the Desert Foxes in the first round of the Africa Cup in Ivory Coast. Previously, Belmadi had also failed to lead the Algerians to the World Cup in Qatar.

Petkovic, born in Bosnia, last worked for Bordeaux (2021-2022). Previously, he was national coach of Switzerland for seven years (2014-2021). He also coached Young Boys (2008-2011) and Lazio (2012-2014), among others.

At Algeria he will have a talented selection including Mohamed Amoura (Union) and Islam Slimani (KV Mechelen) under his wing. Captain Riyad Mahrez (Al-Ahli) is the star player of the team.
