Mayor Vorst wants to keep Union in the municipality, even though there is still a long way to go before permission for a new stadium

The Brussels municipality of Forest wants to keep football club Union SG in Forest. Mayor Mariam El Hamidine (Ecolo) said this on Bx1 on Wednesday. However, there is no green light yet for the construction of a new stadium, she said.

Last month, Brussels State Secretary for Urban Planning Ans Persoons said in the Brussels parliament that negotiations on the new stadium that Union wants to build are “difficult”. According to her, the negotiations with the municipality of Forest that started in the summer of 2023 did not lead to an agreement, but “the dialogue will continue in a more discreet manner”.

“We insist that Union SG will remain in Vorst, that is a certainty,” Mayor El Hamidine said on Wednesday. She added that there are still some questions to be resolved in the areas of mobility and the environment at the Bempt site in Vorst, which is why the club has chosen to do so. “As mayor, I must have answers to all these questions before I can commit or not to commit the Royals. There have been constructive meetings between the club, the municipality and the region, and we will have to see the results of these meetings. There is no green light yet.”
