“We can only show that we still support this club,” KV Oostende players fend off misery (for a while?) with a new cup stunt

What problems? After Eupen and Genk, KV Oostende now also defeated RWDM and is actually in the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup. Or how the Croky Cup makes you forget all the misery on the coast.

Jamath Shoffner, the new American coach, had changed the team for the cup match against RWDM in two places compared to the team that had beaten Zulte Waregem last weekend. As usual, Brent Gabriel took his place between the posts in the cup instead of Liam Bossin. Robbie D’haese replaced Siebe Wylin.

“We only had each other,” D’haese said after the new cup stunt. “Even though we haven’t been paid yet, we went all out. You also saw that last weekend against Zulte Waregem. That’s all we have in our hands. We can only win matches and show the supporters that we still fully support this club. You hope that everything else will be fine as well.”

There was also little to argue about the cup win. KVO was the better team. “We knew in advance that we would leave the ball to RWDM, but the visitors did not have many chances, especially in the first half. We played the counter well. Of course we knew that they would come out of the dressing room even sharper in the second half. However, we have posted something about it. With Brent Laes we scored again 2-0. Afterwards we kept a clean sheet. The fact that RWDM could not really be dangerous is the credit of our entire group. You already saw that in various cup matches. We will take that with us to the next matches,” said D’haese, who was also positive about the new coach. “It is difficult to have an impact on the group after just two training days. The energy he instilled in us helped us win. It seems to me that his ideas are in line with those of Michiel Jonckheere. So the adjustment was not too difficult for our group of players.”

“When we started the cup story, we could never have dreamed that we would be here,” goalkeeper Brent Gabriël also enjoyed. “And yes, we are really in the semi-finals, aren’t we? We will definitely play two more cup matches. I didn’t even have that much work to do. We were the better team, especially before half time. RWDM came through a bit at the beginning of the second half. But after the 2-0 you felt that the match was over. I also have to thank Zech Medley for the way he cleared that ball off the line. That says a lot about our team. Our group hangs together very well. We stand for each other, our teammates, our friends. The new coach is a nice, sympathetic man who gave us confidence for this match.”

Appeal against points deduction

A little after the match, director Paul Conway also had a positive message: “Of course this club will not cease to exist. We continue to fight on and off the field. Our appeal against the nine-point deduction will be heard on Tuesday, January 23.” On February 6, 7 or 8, KV Oostende will play the first leg of the Belgian Cup at home. OHL or Antwerp is then the opponent.
