Real Madrid is one record poorer. The Serbian Red Star Belgrade remained undefeated at home in the competition last weekend for the 122nd (!) time in a row, thus breaking the Royal’s record. That record has stood since 1965 when Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas made a big impression in Madrid.
Red Star Belgrade is doing well in its own competition. The top team leads the Serbian competition and seems to be fully competing for the title. Last Saturday it won at home against middle-ranking Mladost. You might think nothing special, but nothing could be further from the truth. Thanks to the victory, Red Star remained undefeated in the competition for the 122nd home match in a row. The series started after the home defeat against Partizan Belgrade on April 18, 2017 and has now lasted more than 6.5 years.
They do better than Real Madrid. Until recently, the Royal was the record holder. Between 1957 and 1965 it played 121 home games in a row in its own league without losing. The Serbs are now doing one better.
Yet it is not all roses and moonshine for Red Star. No matter how well things go in their own competition, things go so badly in the Champions League. It only took one point in a group with Manchester City, RB Leipzig and Young Boys Bern. An inglorious elimination therefore seems to be in the making. On Wednesday, Red Star Belgrade will host Manchester City on the final day of the group stage.
