After more than 10 minutes, both teams had already hit the target in the AFAS Stadium. Dani de Wit (4.) opened the scoring for the host, Burak Yilmaz (11.) balanced the score with a penalty kick that was cashed in. Via an own goal by Ximo Navarro (24.), AZ dived into the dressing rooms with a bonus.
Vangelos Pavlidis (56.) dispelled the last doubts quickly after the break. Zinho Vanheusden was given a starting place in the home defense and was relieved after the first half. Mathew Ryan (ex-Club Brugge) made his debut between the Alkmaar posts.
AZ nestles itself again between leader Feyenoord (38 points) and PSV (35 points) in second place in the standings of the Dutch highest football division with 36 units.
Utrecht suffers defeat at Twente
Vaclav Cerny (45.+1) forced the opening goal at the start of the stoppage time of the first half and Virgil Misidjan (64.) closed the game after more than an hour by doubling the margin. Othman Boussaid made way for the away team in the 81st minute.
Twente thus maintains contact with number two PSV (35 points) and currently occupies third place in the ranking of the Dutch first division with 34 points.
Earlier in the day, Heerenveen recorded a 3-1 win against Groningen. Amin Sarr (5.) gave the host an early lead, Florian Kruger (40.) put things in order on behalf of the visitors with half time in sight. In a crazy final phase, Pelle van Amersfoort (81.) and Sarr (82.) again crossed the line for their own people. Both Antoine Colassin and Anas Tahiri started in the starting line-up in the winning camp and were eventually substituted in the 88th and 92nd minutes respectively.
Heerenveen thus sneaks into the top 7 with 27 points. Groningen, which saw Cyril Ngonge move to the Italian Hellas Verona this week, is completely lost with five consecutive league defeats. It camps only just above the danger zone, in fifteenth place with 12 units.
