Fellaini won’t stop after all: coach announces retirement of ex-Red Devil, but according to agent “Marouane is still in top form”

Will former Red Devil Marouane Fellaini (35) hang up his football boots? That’s what his coach announced in the Chinese press. Although Fellaini’s agent himself contradicts this. He told ‘L’Avenir’ that the midfielder will not stop playing football at all, but will simply look for a new club.

Not Fellaini himself, but his coach announced the impending retirement of the former Red Devil. “Although I regret it, I respect his decision to quit,” Choi Kang-hee told Xinhua, China’s official state press. The reason why Fellaini will soon hang up his football boots is not far to seek.

“He’s a great player. Maybe his age is gradually taking a toll – he was in pain for a day or two after every match,” said his coach.

Still in top form

But moments later the confusion only increased. Fellaini’s agent denied to ‘L’Avenir’ that the midfielder will soon be hanging up his football boots. “Marouane is still in top form. He has no physical problems after matches,” he told the Walloon newspaper.

Whether he stops or not, it is certain that Fellaini will leave Shandong Taishan anyway. On Saturday morning he was honored with a ceremony and thanked for services rendered. “In recent years, Fellaini has stirred up the atmosphere during home matches with goals and victories, time and time again,” his club said in a statement online. “Let us honor him and give him a big round of applause. He came as a superstar and he leaves as a legend.”

It is still unclear where Fellaini’s future lies. Another new challenge or quit: we have to wait until the 35-year-old midfielder communicates himself.

In 2019, Fellaini left the English top club Manchester United for an adventure in China. Four years later, the Chinese competition becomes the end of a great career. For Shandong Taishan, Fellaini played 139 games (so far), shaking the net 50 times and providing 12 assists. He became Chinese national champion once and won the cup twice. The latter can become three, because Shandong will play the final of the Chinese Cup on November 25.

Fellaini previously played for Standard, Everton and Manchester United. Fellaini was also part of the ‘golden generation’ of Red Devils. Fellaini was present at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and the 2016 European Championships, until he announced his retirement from the national team in 2019. Will you soon be saying goodbye to professional football?
