Spectacle and many goals in the Limburg derby: Genk takes the lead 0-3 after the break, hat trick in less than six minutes from Koita for STVV

The derby, a party! KRC Genk and STVV shared the points on Sunday afternoon after a memorable game of football (3-3). One in which visitor Koita wrote history with a derby in 5 minutes and 53 seconds. And KRC Genk fell behind 0-3 after halftime in a swirling Cegeka Arena.

The derby started with a lot of mutual respect and a minute of goosebumps: a packed Cegeka Arena honored ex-Golden Shoe Lon Polleunis, who died this week, with a standing ovation. The tone was set for a memorable football afternoon, in which both coaches had to miss an important player. For the home team, McKenzie dropped out with a toe injury, the visitors had to make do without an ill Steuckers.

Gigantic contrast

Wouter Vrancken opted for only two fresh players compared to the European match against Fiorentina. The nine others could not hide the fact that a heavy European evening had not left them feeling cold. Genk soon appeared to lack energy, and the passing also lacked any precision.

The contrast with what a fresh and cheerful STVV served was enormous. Coach Fink remained true to his daring playing style, his players expanded the field and quickly looked for and found free spaces.

Koita writes history

Racing was unable to threaten once before half time, apart from a poor shot from Zeqiri and an infiltration from El Khannouss. While on the other side, half an hour into the storm, a total dike breach caused enormous havoc.

The man behind the wheel of the crusher goes by the name Aboubakary Koita, the man who could count on interest from KRC Genk last summer. With a hat trick in less than six minutes – 5’53” to be precise – he delivered one of the heaviest blows ever in a Limburg derby. First, the Truiense left winger cut down both Munoz and Cuesta with one move to shoot Vandevoordt, a little later he fired his volley into the square after a blocked free kick and he was allowed to push in the 3-0 with an assist from Hashioka after a Sadick-Arteaga collision. .

Triple change

Typical of the Genk blackout: in those six minutes the damage could have been even higher. Vandevoordt should have defused Kaya’s attempt with a foot reflex.

With a three-way substitution at halftime, coach Wouter Vrancken tried to turn the tide. Kayembe, one of the newcomers, had to block a shot from Kaya, but then the home team started an admirable catch-up race. Hrosovsky, who had also come on as a substitute, found the new left winger El Khannouss, who calmly cut inside and saw his place ball land perfectly in the far corner: 1-3.

Catching up complete

The fire lit the fuse. The Cegeka Arena believed in a derby miracle, especially when the score was 2-3 twenty minutes before the end. Once again the assist was from Hrosovsky, Arokodare took his cross cleverly on the chest to score from the turn. The line judge had seen offside but was called to order by the VAR.

There was electricity in the air, you could sense that this would be one of the most memorable derbies. One who didn’t deserve a loser and didn’t get one. STVV goalkeeper first kept Bonsu Baah and then Arokodare from equalizing with great saves, but then made a painful mistake on a not so spectacular place ball from Paintsil: 3-3.

We have already completed the match of the year at the end of September and Genk and STVV also remain brotherly next to each other in the general ranking. While Racing still hasn’t won at home and STVV hasn’t lost away yet.
