Elise Mertens (WTA-32) was unable to qualify for the eighth finals of the Australian Open on Saturday. In the third round, the 27-year-old from Limburg lost 6-2 and 6-3 to her former doubles partner Aryna Sabalenka (WTA-5) in 1 hour and 14 minutes.

Sabalenka is the fifth seed in Melbourne, where she won the doubles together with Mertens in 2021, but did not score very well in the singles. The 24-year-old Belarusian was already a semi-finalist at Wimbledon (2021) and the US Open (2021 and 2022), but equals her best result at the Australian Open with an eighth final. To do better this year, she must pass Belinda Bencic (WTA-10) in her next match. The 25-year-old Swiss eliminated the Italian Camila Giorgi (WTA-70) 2-6 and 5-7.
