Check out everything about the signings, departures and adjustments of Abel Ferreira’s team at Palmeiras.

Palmeiras will make its debut in the season on January 14, against São Bento, in the first round of Paulistão, at Allianz Parque.

The cast had already been carrying out remote activities since the end of the year, but this week they reported to the Football Academy to start work on the field. Abel Ferreira, after a few days in Portugal, joined his coaching staff at the CT on that farm.

The plan for 2023 was to go less to the market and promote players from the base categories, as happened with the promotion of seven under-20 athletes. The board is keeping an eye on (few) signings, but has not yet concluded any for the season.

Abel Ferreira doesn’t want many reinforcements. Initially, he only thinks of two: a midfielder, given the possibility of Danilo being traded, and a left-handed winger.

The board agrees with the needs diagnosed by the Portuguese, but has no advanced negotiations so far. Right now, the trend is for Verdão to start Paulistão without signings.

The club understands that, with the Brazilian champion base and the promoted players from the under-20, a strong squad to start the Paulista and still to dispute the Supercopa, that is foreseen for the end of the month, against Flamengo, without defined place.

As the squad is practically the same as the one that ended last season, reinforced by boys, the starting lineup will also be almost the same. The only major absence is Gustavo Scarpa.

Crack of the last Brazilian Championship, the now midfielder of Nottingham Forest, from England, must be replaced in the team by Raphael Veiga, who ended the season injured. Endrick, sold to Real Madrid, will have his first full year as a professional and already as a starter.

Palmeiras hopes that reinforcements with a timid performance last year, such as Atuesta, Navarro, López and Merentiel, will grow in performance. Jailson, who started 2022 well but injured his knee, is participating in the pre-season and will be new.

The idea is to further strengthen the game model that in 2022 yielded the Paulista, Recopa Sul-Americana and Brasileirão titles.

Adjustments are being made with activities in two periods, in addition to training games. On Thursday, the first match against Suzano took place. There are still others scheduled against São José (8th), Desportivo Brasil (8th), São Bernardo (11th) and Monte Azul (11th).

Departures

In addition to Scarpa, Jorge, on loan to Fluminense, and Wesley, sold to Cruzeiro, were the other players who left Verdão at the beginning of 2023.

The club is still attentive to a negotiation that could happen this month: the sale of Danilo. The midfielder is often mentioned as a target in Europe, but there have been no offers for Palmeiras in this window so far.

The board understands that this could happen soon and is on the alert even for the need to seek a replacement, in case the number 28, one of the pillars of the team, leaves.

Names like Kuscevic and Breno Lopes, who even negotiated their departures in search of more minutes, remain in the group for the time being.

Of the athletes who returned from loan, Matheus Fernandes has already been loaned to Bragantino, while striker Carlos Eduardo still has an undefined future. Anyway, he’s out of Abel’s plans.
