The German Alexander Zverev (ATP 13) was defeated on Wednesday as the twelfth seed 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2 by the American lucky loser Michael Mmoh (ATP 107). The game lasted 3 hours and 28 minutes.

Zverev, a semi-finalist in Melbourne in 2020, played his first grand slam tournament since suffering a serious ankle injury in last year’s Roland Garros semi-final. Mmoh entered the main draw thanks to the last-minute withdrawal of David Goffin with stomach flu the night before his first match.
