English footballer Anton Walkes has died at the age of 25. That has been announced by his club Charlotte FC, which takes part in Major League Soccer (MLS). The MLS announced that the defender died “following an accident in South Florida”. According to the Miami Herald, it was a collision between boats.

Walkes was found unconscious after two boats collided around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Chest compressions were applied before he was taken to hospital in critical condition, according to the local newspaper Miami Herald.
“We are heartbroken at the loss of Anton Walkes, an incredible father, a loving person and an outstanding human being,” said Zoran Krneta, sports director at Charlotte. “Anton epitomized what it means to be a part of Charlotte FC and our entire community mourns this tragedy. The impact he had in the locker room and throughout Charlotte will never be forgotten. We are thinking of his dear family during this time and will support them in any way we can.”
Born in London, Walkes began his professional career with Tottenham. In 2016, he played one game in the Spurs A-squad, who loaned him to Atlanta United and Portsmouth. He signed a contract with the latter club in 2018, to return to MLS in 2020 at Atlanta United. Since the end of 2021, Walkes has been on the payroll at Charlotte. He played 93 games in the MLS.
