Anderlecht will play against KV Mechelen tomorrow. Coach Brian Riemer mainly came with a news update. He resolved the goalkeeper issue and appointed Kasper Schmeichel as the new number 1. In addition, Yari Verschaeren is ahead of schedule during the rehabilitation of his knee injury.

It is not really a surprise, but Kasper Schmeichel is now formally the new first goalkeeper of Anderlecht. Coach Brian Riemer has always said that rotation was not an option in goal and that he would choose. Maxime Dupé loses the battle. “Kasper has been appointed as the first goalkeeper,” said the coach. “He played the last two matches and will also be in goal against Mechelen. I haven’t explicitly talked to Maxime Dupé about this, but footballers are not stupid. Maxime already understood the situation. I did say to the entire group that that choice is not final. There is healthy competition in the team. Schmeichel will have to prove every week – also in training – that he deserves his place in goal. Our goalkeeper coach will make continuous evaluations. Especially with large teams you have to accept competition.”

Even before the match against KV Mechelen, Kasper Dolberg is fit again and Moussa N’Diaye is also available. Riemer wants to work towards a basic team, but it looks like Dolberg will take the place of Luis Vazquèz again. “A basic team does not mean that there can no longer be any changes,” said T1. For Amuzu (hip) it remains to be seen whether he experiences a reaction after the training sessions. It is not yet certain whether Ciske can be deployed.

Yari on the field

The Danish coach then gave an injury update for the boys who had been recovering for some time. Thomas Delaney (fracture of collarbone) is recovering well and with a bit of luck will be available again after the international break. This also applies to Majeed Ashimeru. The Ghanaian has been struggling with a serious hamstring injury for weeks, but he is almost out of it. “He can’t sprint at full speed yet, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

This also applies to Yari Verschaeren, who tore the cruciate ligament in his knee last season. The playmaker is now back on the field for individual training. He is ahead of schedule and may still play a match before the end of 2023. That was not originally planned. “I would be surprised if Yari does not participate in a match this year,” Riemer continued. “He is past the point of six months of rehabilitation and is doing well. I see him twisting and turning on the field. Of course we’re not going to take any risks. He may be available at the end of November or on December 27. But this year is a target.”

So positive developments. Anderlecht also wants to continue the upward trend in terms of results against KV Mechelen. Especially because the competition is dedicated to the birthday of Paul Van Himst. RSCA plays with snow-white retro shirts based on the outfits of its time. “Kasper Dolberg was very enthusiastic about those jerseys,” concluded Riemer. “I don’t want to think about losing points in those jerseys. I told the players that they must pay tribute to a club icon like Van Himst. This is important for Anderlecht and for the fans. Moreover, we lost at home to Mechelen last season, which certainly meant we missed out on the play-offs. That was a very dark day. We have something to put right.”
