Arthur Vermeeren may already be in the selection of Atlético coach Simeone: “If he can adapt as quickly as possible, that is good for us”

After the top transfer of Arthur Vermeeren, Atlético coach Diego Simeone will have a new player at his disposal on Sunday evening (9 p.m.) in the league match against Valencia. At the weekly press conference, the Argentinian was of course also asked a few questions about the ex-Antwerp midfielder.

“He is a very good player, who certainly has a great future,” the 53-year-old Argentinian said at the press conference. “We will have to work with him, help him grow and develop, so that he can compete for a starting place. He is young, but I have already told him that football knows no age, because Axel (Witsel, nvdr.) is 35 years old and plays every match. Age is determined by your head and your legs. If he can adapt as quickly as possible, that will be good for him and for us. We believe in his qualities and in the footballer he will become. We are clear about where we stand, but we will have to work for it.”

At Los Colchoneros, Vermeeren has to compete with Rodrigo de Paul, Saul Niguez and Koke. “From what we have seen of him in the Champions League and in the league, he can play in all three positions in midfield. Everything we have seen is very good and we know how to treat him as a young player.”

There is barely one day of rest between the league match against Valencia and the quarter-final of the Copa del Rey against Sevilla, which means Simeone may rest some basic players and Vermeeren may already be able to play. However, the Argentinian was not concerned about the physical condition of Witsel and co. “We only select the players who we think can perform best. We look at it game by game and simply have to accept that we are playing so many games in such a short time.”

Vermeeren was on the training field for the first time on Saturday morning with his new teammates. The young Belgian had a chat with Antoine Griezmann and former Red Devil Witsel, among others.
