Belgian supporters want to make their voices heard: no more football on Friday and Sunday evenings?

Belgian Supporters, the interest group of Belgian football supporters, wants to make its voice heard in the tender file for the new football contract. The body advocates more participation from supporters in determining the starting times.

In 2022, Belgian Supporters already succeeded in having the late Sunday evening matches (at 9 p.m.) and the Monday matches removed from the football calendar. Now the interest group wants to let the supporters’ voices weigh in again in the run-up to the renewal of the TV contract in 2024. A survey among members shows that most football supporters watch matches on Saturday evenings (6 p.m. and 8 p.m.) and Sunday afternoons (6 p.m. hours). They are less available for matches on Friday evening (8.45 pm) and Sunday evening (7.15 pm).

Urgent call

“It is high time that these insights are not only heard, but also integrated into the tender file for the renewal of the TV contract,” the interest group writes in a press release. “This urgent call is not just about adjusting showtimes; it’s about restoring the essence of football by giving supporters a crucial role in the decision-making process. It is a battle for the soul of the game, not just looking at statistics and broadcasting rights, but at the true football family that breathes and lives this game. It is time to take the supporters’ voice seriously, not as an optional consideration, but as the beating heart of football.”
