At the beginning of January, KAA Gent posted a video of its U9 team, which led to a stream of racist reactions such as “formerly AA Gent, now FC Congo”. The club initially responded individually to the individual comments, but eventually decided to take all comments offline.
The parents of the KAA Gent U9 players were immediately informed and briefed by the club about the incident. The club did keep the video in question online as a statement against racism. The incident caused a lot of reactions and the club considered possible police steps.
Act by word
On Monday, KAA Gent formally filed a complaint with the Ghent police for ‘online racism’. The report was made at the counter that the police set up specifically for hate crimes. Police spokesperson Matto Langeraert confirms this. “The investigation into the report is ongoing,” it continues.
In addition to the complaint to the police, KAA Gent also went to the racism reporting center of Voetbal Vlaanderen on Monday. “We add action to our words,” says spokesman Tom Vandenbulcke. “We disapprove of these facts and strictest and believe it is important to formally take these steps.”
