The Referee Department has ruled on Christoph Lepoint’s much publicized foul against Cihan Canak last Saturday. In an attempt to break off a counter-attack, Seraing’s captain stepped on the Standard youngster’s Achilles heel at the end of the Liège derby.
Referee Bram Van Driessche only drew yellow for the horror tackle and was surprisingly not corrected by VAR Jasper Vergoote. In their weekly round-up, the Referee Department is critical of the conduct of the two officials.
“The Referee Department expects a straight red card and VAR intervention for this offense as the Seraing player has no intention of playing the ball. The foul is committed from behind, with one leg straight and studs forward. With his action he endangers the safety of the Standard player,” can be read in their statement.

Expanded to 1B
The miss seems to have consequences for Jasper Vergoote in the first place. The West Fleming was already appointed this week for Cercle – Union (as referee) and AA Gent – Charleroi (as VAR), but can then spend a weekend reflecting in 1B. Bram Van Driessche gets away without punishment: he has to lead Zulte Waregem – Westerlo in the right direction next Saturday.
