A friendly match between Russia and European Championship participant Serbia will be played in the capital Moscow on March 21, the Russian Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday.

Serbia will be the first European opponent of the Russian national football team since the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine. Since then, Russian clubs and national teams have been suspended worldwide, preventing them from participating in international competitions. Over the past two years, the Russian national team has played practice matches, often against friendly nations such as Iran and Cuba.

But Serbia has also maintained good relations with Moscow for years and did not join the Western sanctions against the country. “We look forward to the friendly meeting with our brothers,” the Russian federation said in a statement on Telegram.
